RELEASE BLITZ & REVIEW: The Marriage Pact by Winter Renshaw

I was sixteen when I vowed I would never marry him.

We shook on it. Pinky swore. Even put it in writing and all but signed our names in blood.

It was the one and only thing we ever agreed on.

To the world, he’s Prince Ian, Duke of Montcroix, second in line to the Chamont throne. Panty-melting accent. Royal charm. Hypnotic presence. Blindingly gorgeous. Laundry list of women all over the world who would give their first born for the chance to marry him. Most eligible bachelor in the free world …

But to me, he’s nothing more than the son of my father’s best friend—the pesky blue-eyed boy who made it his mission to annoy the ever-loving hell out of me summer after summer as our families vacationed together, our parents oblivious to our mutual disdain as they joked about our “betrothal.”

He was also my first kiss.

And my first taste of heartbreak so cataclysmic it almost broke me.

I meant it with every fiber of my soul when I swore I’d never marry him.

But on the eve of my 24th birthday, His Royal Highness has the audacity to show up at my door after years of silence and make a demand will forever change the trajectory of our lives: “We have to break our pact.”

Caroline's Review
✮✮✮✮

This was a pretty sweet and a little bit steamy read.

"I don't know what it is about first loves, but even the briefest ones leave their marks and the tiniest, most microscopic part of you can't un-love them, even if you can't stand them."

Emelie and Julian have known one another since they were kids. They were never the best of friends until the summer Emelie was sixteen, when Julian suddenly shows an interest in her. However, by the end of the summer, Emelie is broken-hearted and they don't see each other again for eight years, when Julian unexpectedly turns up on her doorstep to break their marriage pact - much to her hate-filled horror!

"It's all about Emelie. Then again, hasn't it always been? She's both the most wonderful thing that happened to me - and the worst."

He proposes an arrangement that would be beneficial to them both. When truths start to emerge about the past, what starts out as a marriage of convenience quickly develops into something much, much more, but the path to forever happiness is strewn with obstacles.

Emelie and Julian have a strong connection and their relationship moved quickly from one status to another. I felt sad for the years they lost but loved how quickly they put things aside to move forward. However, I must say that as the story moved to its conclusion, I was frustrated by Emelie's reaction and behaviour and, honestly, the ending was not what I actually expected because of who Julian was and all that his birthright entails.

Overall, I enjoyed this story - it was a fairly light, easy read.

A dark and compelling new thriller from the bestselling author of SAVING SOPHIE. Perfect for fans of Little Darlings and How to Get Away with Murder.

Louisa is an exhausted, sleep-deprived new mother and, approaching her fortieth birthday, the very last thing she wants to do is celebrate.

And one person in particular she never expected to see again is there – her ex-boyfriend from college, the handsome and charismatic Oliver Dunmore. When Oliver’s wife Melissa goes missing after the party, everyone remembers what happened that night differently. It could be the alcohol, but it seems more than one person has something to hide.

Louisa is determined to find the truth about what happened to Melissa. But just how far does she need to look…?

One simple Facebook invitation unfolds into something both tragic and monstrous; a story of obsessive love, breath-taking deception and masterful manipulation.

About The Author

Sam Carrington lives in Devon with her husband and three children. She worked for the NHS for 15 years, during which time she qualified as a nurse. Following the completion of a Psychology degree
she went to work for the prison service as an Offending Behaviour Facilitator.

Her experiences within this field inspired her writing. She left the service to spend time with her family and to follow her dream of being a novelist.

Extract

The quiet murmurings that stopped as Louisa walked in the room, the closely guarded messages on his iPhone, the way he flitted about when Tiff was around – those were the little things that gave him away. He’d never been able to keep secrets. It’d been something Louisa had found endearing when she’d first met him on Millennium Eve at the party she shouldn’t have been at. But nineteen years later, his inability to hide anything despite believing he could – and that he was good at it – had lost its appeal.

Noah screamed in her left ear. She shifted the small bundle from one shoulder to the other, dragging the damp, sickly-smelling muslin square along with him, and bounced him in a vain attempt to console his colicky cries. He’d been howling for three days straight, Louisa was certain. As certain as she could be in her ‘new mum’ catatonic state, where each day rolled into the next with no real context, no definition or concept of time. Instead of faffing about secretively on his phone, Brian would be better served taking Noah and giving her five minutes to herself. Even going to the loo was a luxury these days.

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Cover Design: Lori Jackson Design

 Release Date: June 27, 2019

Blurb

They call me the sugar whisperer.
Anything your tongue desires, I can bake it. Scones? Child’s play. Cupcakes? I’ll frost them so good you won’t know what hit you. Donuts? Please.
You’re talking to a master baker.
But there’s one egg I’ve never been able to crack.
My best friend.
Correction: My former best friend.
She’s the apple in my pie. The whip in my cream. The lemon in my meringue. The wish in my bone.
She’s the one who got away.
After ten years in the military, she’s back. She’s bruised and battered by life, but she’s back.
Except she’s not my second chance. She’s gone to the dark side.
Running a rival bakery in a town not big enough for two.
So now I have to decide—which do I want more?
My bakery?
Or the woman I never should’ve let go in the first place?

Master Baker is a deliciously fun friends-to-enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy featuring a smooth-talking baker, the one who got away, and a goat with more matchmaking tendencies than a nosy old grandpa. It stands alone with no cheating or cliffhangers.

Caroline's Review
✮✮✮✮

This is was another helping of humorous capers and pretty much what I expected from this author and this series.

"She's the apple in my pie. The whip in my cream. The lemon in my meringue. The wish in my bone. The one who got away."

Grady Rock can't believe that his high school best friend and the only girl he's ever loved is back in his orbit after a ten-year absence. However, not only is she back home, she's opened a rival bakery. They get off on the wrong foot but gradually fall back into their old groove. Unfortunately, hostilities between their warring towns make it difficult for them to have a public relationship.

"I always thought his dimples were sexy, but I can't deny what broody, seething, wound-up Grady is doing to my nether regions."

Annika Williams has left the army to help her mother's dreams come true. Unfortunately, baking is not her forte and the boy she tried so hard not to love adds to her full plate. How can she make the bakery a success? How can she be happy with the enemy? Is she brave enough to overcome her insecurities to make a go of it?

"She's my happiness. And I'm going to do my damnedest to be her happiness too."

This was a fun, sexy book. Annika and Grady had brilliant chemistry and banter. I absolutely adored Grady - he pretty much bent over backwards to help Annika and to make sure that she was happy - almost too much. As I progressed through the book, I felt that Grady was doing all the running and I found it hard to really like Annika. She took a lot from him and expected him to do all the running in their relationship. I wanted to see her stepping up to the plate more and risking her family and her town's wrath more for the love of Grady.

Overall, a great, sexy read with colourful, funny characters.

Excerpt

JESSE

I’m outside. Where are you?
That’s what I text to Emma once I pull up in front of her building. She’s testing me but I’m ready for her today. I am willing to overlook the drugging and the kidnapping—but no one walks out on me the way she did last night.
No one.
So am I being petty and childish by demanding that she spend the day with me learning her lesson?
Absolutely.
Do I care?
Absolutely not.
I don’t even know what we’re going to do today. I have no plans other than monopolize her day. Make her waste time with me. Make her hate me.
This is what’s called the classic hate fuck, Jesse.
Her words are burned into my mind forever. I will never stop hearing her say that to me. Ever.
The balls on this woman. Giant, motherfucking bull-sized balls on this woman.
My phone dings in my hand just as a horn honks behind me.
I glance down at the screen and read her message. I’m right behind you.
Then I glance in the rear-view and see her waving at me from a… what the fuck?
She’s smiling broadly from the driver’s seat of a matte-black Lamborghini Huracán, her curlicue pigtails bobbing around her face.
She honks again. My phone dings. The text reads. Get in. I’m driving.
Oh, I don’t think so. I came here in a motherfucking Ferrari Portofino. Red. So I text back. You get in. I’m driving.
My phone rings. “What?” I ask, so annoyed. Because while the Portofino was an excellent choice, I do have to admit the Huracán has sex written all over it.
“I’m driving. Get in.”
“You’re not driving,” I say. “I’m the man, I do the driving.”
She revs her engine behind me. “We’re taking my car. If you’re a good boy maybe I’ll let you drive it.”
“I could buy my own Huracán, Emma. I don’t need to drive yours.”
I catch her smiling even bigger in the mirror. “We can compare dicks all day long if you want. But I’m not getting out of this car until we arrive at our destination. So. I suggest you pick and choose your battles carefully, Mr. Boston. Because as you can see, I’m sporting pigtails. And what you can’t see is that I’m wearing the same outfit I was that day at the shaved ice stand all those years ago.”
“Hmm,” I say.
“Hmm, indeed. This is your fantasy, right? You want to make me look like that teenager I was back then. Fine. I’ll play along. If you let me drive my car.”
“I don’t know where you got this car, but it’s definitely not yours.”
“It is now. I had it delivered fifteen minutes ago.”
“You bought a two-hundred-thousand-dollar car to impress me?”
“Two-seventy-five with upgrades. But who’s counting? And I didn’t do it to impress you, Jesse. Don’t be dumb. I did it to make you feel inferior.”
“So that’s how this is gonna go?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You’re trying to hate-fuck me with a car.”
“I… don’t really know if that’s a thing. But sure.”
I hesitate.
“You know you want to drive it.”
“I really don’t have a thing for fast cars, Emma. You miscalculated.”
She revs her engine again and it sounds like a fucking lion. Or a lion ready to fuck. One of the two. “Everyone has a thing for this car. Don’t you want to see the interior? I wish I had time to customize it myself, but oh, well. Listen to the sound system—”
The chorus of Smells Like Teen Spirit blares out into the city. Everyone within a hundred yards turn to look at her.
I check the mirror again and find her banging her head and laughing hysterically, her pigtails flying back and forth.
I text, Stop it. You’re embarrassing yourself.
She pauses her head-banging to text back. Get. In. The. Car. Now. Or I’ll roll down the window and ask that hot-as-fuck jogger to get in instead.
I glance at the jogger. He’s shirtless, sweaty, and not bad-looking—OK. No. He’s hot, even I can see that—and he’s also smiling at Emma like he wants to throw her down on the hood of that Huracán and fuck her right here in front of the whole city.
I get out, toss my keys to her building valet, and intercept the jogger with a hand in the air. “Back off, asshole.”

Adam Oliver hated me.

My long-term boyfriend who didn’t actually exist.
The one named Adam Oliver—the guy I’d crushed on all through high school.
So the real Adam had no idea that he and I were engaged in a years-long, committed, serious relationship.

Caroline's Review
✮✮✮✮✮

Thoroughly enjoyed this slow-burn romance.

"I don't know why being honest about my feelings was the hardest thing for me to do sometimes."

Hollis Vinke had a huge crush on Adam Oliver in high school. For one brief moment in senior year, he seemed to connect with her, and then he seemed to hate her. Three years later, to avoid her wealthy but controlling parents' attempts at matchmaking, Hollis has created a fake boyfriend - he might have been loosely based on Adam. When events happen that has her parents believing that Adam is actually her boyfriend, Hollis needs to take action.

"I couldn't explain it really, except that she was different - multi-faceted in ways I was only beginning to discover."

Adam Oliver is back in town for family reasons. He's struggling to pay the bills and look after his family. When Hollis repeatedly comes to his rescue, he finds a way to repay her. However, entering into a fake relationship with her opens his eyes to Hollis' true nature - and it's a revelation to him. A revelation that has his feelings changing and moving in an unexpected direction.

"My attraction to Hollis wasn't just a physical reaction, it was deep, something so intrinsic to my DNA that I couldn't decipher it myself."

This was a fantastic read. I enjoyed the depth of the story - the individual struggles of both Adam and Hollis. They might have been from different sides of the track but both had issues to contend with. The more time they spent together, the more they gelled and discovered new things about one another. I loved how Hollis' beauty and goodness melted Adam's heart. I loved that Hollis never gave up on him. She had such a giving soul and her goodness was admirable. They were both good people and I thought they were beautiful together.
