Fabulous read by a new-to-me author.
"I think you're gorgeous, interesting, sexy, and when you don't have a massive wall of spikes around you, the kind of soft I could sink into."
Helen Ortega is as spiky as they come. She's gutsy, mouthy and so incredibly confident, but her strength is what took my breath away. She did what she had to to get by and reach her end goal. She trudged through her life, completely focused on her future and being able to take care of her younger sister.
"I didn't know I wasn't breathing until I met you."
In the meantime, Theo Whitlock is going through his life almost in a haze. He's trying to finish up his senior year to escape his overbearing father, but he's virtually given up and practically limping towards his end goal. Helen shakes up his life and questions what he really wants out of it, and from her.
"You make it easy to light the match, Tiger. Now watch me make it burn."
I couldn't put this book down! I found Theo and Helen a compelling couple. They both thought that they didn't want a relationship but the connection and understanding between them was deep. We think that Helen is the one that's closed off and private - that she's the one whose walls need to come down. Theo breaks her down gradually with his care, persistence and tenderness. I ached for the lack of support and love Helen had in her life, and Theo became her soft place to fall. However, as the story progresses, we realise that Theo might not have a wall of spikes, but he was definitely a deep well of secrets. We come to understand that Theo has a past that is belied by his present. The chemistry between them was intense and almost obsessive that masked their growing feelings. This was a fantastic read about two damaged souls who needed each other so much, and I just adored their passionate, heart-wrenching, and soul-searching journey.
