Thoroughly enjoyed this smart romance from a new-to-me author.

"Esther wasn't sure when her feelings had changed, but he didn't annoy her at all anymore."

When Esther makes a deal with her annoying neighbour, Jonathan, she never bargained on how her feelings for him would change. She goes from not being to stand him, to not being able to stand being away from him. 

"She should move. She shouldn't be sitting this close to him. The thing was, though...she didn't want to."

She doesn't believe in love and is not looking for a relationship, so her feelings absolutely scare the hell out of her.

"He wanted more from her than she could give. She could see it in his eyes. He was looking for a relationship. A girlfriend. That wasn't her."

And, worse, his feelings for her scare the hell out of her, too.

This was a fab, smart romance. Esther is pragmatic, honest to a fault, strident, incredibly clever, and doesn't suffer fools gladly. She's also somewhat emotionally stunted. I enjoyed watching her battling with her conscience, her feelings, and her attitude to life and love. 

"What's really going on is that you have feelings for me and you're scared."

Jonathan is an absolute sweetheart, somewhat vulnerable, and really knows and understands her - even when she doesn't quite understand herself.

This story was about a woman, whose barriers are stripped away, exposed to true emotion, overcoming her fears, and realising the reward once she's brave enough to take a leap of faith.

Thoroughly enjoyed this second novel in this series.

"Sure she's got a genius IQ and is the likeliest person to build a tele-transporter or some geeky Star Trek sh*t like that, but I'm what the ladies call a bona fide catch."

Henry Walton is fun, gorgeous, rich, and on his way to an NFL contract. So, why on earth would the incredibly brainy, nerdy, albeit sexy, Elle dump him after a few weeks of fun together? Sure, he's not ready for a major commitment but they were really hot together. Whatever! There are plenty of other girls out there who want him. Unfortunately, when his game starts to suffer, he pinpoints the reason back to Elle, and he's determined to win back his talisman - but, she doesn't want anything to do with him.

"I need a man. One who will be there when things get difficult. One who's had to deal with the real world. You only know screwing and football...there is no universe in which your interests and mine could coalesce into a symbiotic relationship outside the bedroom."

Elle has a lot on her plate. She likes to keep her life compartmentalised. She really liked Henry but they are too different, and are on two different paths, to ever be together seriously, so she's cutting her losses.

"She may look like a helpless, lost little nerd begging for social ridicule, but I've yet to meet anyone with bigger balls. Male or female."

I loved this second book. It wasn't as comical as the first one but really good, nonetheless. Henry is fun-loving, focused on his football, whilst trying not to become enmeshed in his family's politics. I loved how much he actually adored Elle and all her quirkiness. Elle was a fab character! She's been something of a misfit all her genius life and, now that she's older, she completely owns her oddness and doesn't really give a damn what other people think of her.

"I'm not normal. I'm so completely different that I might be my own species, but that's my burden and my business."

Henry and Elle seem complete opposites on the surface but, underneath it all, they are really very similar. I enjoyed Henry's efforts in trying to win Elle back and how his feelings for her confused him. It was interesting to see how all of Elle's assumptions about Henry and his life were proved otherwise, as she starts to understand him better. The painful, life-changing sacrifice that Henry makes for her had my heart thumping, but I adored how Elle finally came into her own when Henry's life got turned upside down.

The storyline took a surprising turn and also finished on something of a cliffhanger. Although the next book will actually be about a different couple, we are assured that we will get more of Henry and Elle, too. Can't wait!

This is the first time I’ve read this author and, WOW! 

We understand from the first few pages that the female protagonist, Tessa Emerson, is deeply unhappy and trapped in an abusive marriage. It turns out that she’s a nurse at the local prison and that her husband is the warden there. She’s surviving day to day, scared to fight back as she has no one else in her life. 

“It turns out when your life falls to pieces right before your eyes, it isn’t with a bang…it’s with a whisper.”

One fateful day, a new prisoner arrives. His scrutiny is intense and he makes her feel things that she’s never felt before. She knows it’s wrong and forbidden to be anything other than professional with him, but he draws her in. Her attraction to him sparks life back into her existence.

When things spiral out of control and she’s forced to commit a felony, she finds herself on the run from the law, and from the enigmatic prisoner called Gracin Kingsley.

This book was raw, brutal and carnal, with glimmers of tenderness. It was difficult to read in places due to the nature of the story, but it was riveting and I had no idea where the plot was going. Not for the faint-hearted!

”He’s a craving I can’t quite shake. A disease slowly spreading through me. My head tells me I should walk away, but my greedy heart begs for more of his illicit attention.”

Tessa has had no real happiness in her life and but Gracin is electrifying and persistent, and makes her feel desirable and cared for. She might seem broken but she’s got a backbone of steel. Gracin is a big mystery and I loved the surprise of him and who he really was in the outside world.

They are two disconnected people with a connection that is undeniable, compelling, and ultimately soul-rewarding. Fab read!
