REVIEW: Fallen by Mia Sheridan

Fallen by Mia Sheridan

Release Date: 18 October 2020

Scarlett Lattimore arrives at Lilith House, an abandoned mansion built in 1876, that later housed a reform school for troubled girls, to start a new life with her seven-year-old daughter.
But between the nearby town with the strange, disconcerting feel, the deputy sheriff who is equal parts intriguing and suspicious, and the discovery that their new home holds a dark and violent past, Scarlett soon begins to question her rash decision.

She is shaken and afraid by the screams that echo in the walls and the drumbeat that arises from the surrounding woods where the ghost of an indigenous man is said to roam, seeking vengeance. Her fear is also personal, because Scarlett knew one of the girls who attended the school, a friend who escaped into those woods and was never seen again. They all thought she was a rebellious runaway who later encountered foul play, but perhaps the truth is far more sinister.

As Scarlett’s extraordinary daughter Haddie becomes consumed by the eerie figure who weaves and beckons through the forest fog, and a legacy of secrets reveal themselves, it becomes clear both Scarlett and Haddie are in grave danger. When the past intersects with the present, they will come face to face with the true evil of Lilith House. An evil that has lasted for more than a century.

Oh my gosh! This story was super amazing! It was scary and horrifying, yet so beautiful. Moving between the past and the present, the plot was intriguing and intricate. Evil abounded but then there was life-affirming beauty and so much joy to be discovered. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE STORY!

"Yeah, he was handsome, she'd give him that. But she didn't trust handsome men - in her experience, it was too easy for them to lie."

Scarlett Lattimore has just bought and moved into Lilith House in small-town Farrow with her 7YO daughter, Haddie. She plans to restore it and open her own business. She's startled when the handsome yet disconcerting Deputy Camden West walks uninvited and unannounced into her new home. There's something off about him but not just him, there's something off about the whole town and its inhabitants. As she begins to explore and restore her new home, she also begins to unravel its mysteries and the stories that surround it.

"It amazed him that when he was in her presence for short bursts of time, it felt as if nothing else existed, only her."

Camden has deep secrets and plans of his own but he never planned for Scarlett. He is torn between his loyalties and the wonder of Scarlett. The more he gets to know her, the more he knows his feelings and the fact that he needs to keep her and her sweet and otherworldly little girl safe.

This was a spectacular read! I would definitely class this as a modern gothic romance. There's a huge mystery to be solved - in the past as well as the present. I was totally gripped by this author's words. Sometimes, the events were slightly difficult to read - the fear, the horror and the despair really got me - but then there'd be moments of piercing sweetness and warmth. This book had everything! As a reader, you can piece together the story through clues but one of the final revelations completely took me by surprise. Wow! Such an amazing story and way up my Top Read 2020 list! Bravo!
