⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It's been a while since I've read a historical novel and this one revived my love of them.
"Lady Helen Ravenel...a woman who was cultured, innocent, shy, aristocratic. Everything he was not."
Helen Ravenel looks like an angel, and is timid and delicate. She has lead an unusually sheltered life tucked away on the family estate, which means she is ill-equipped to deal with men in general, let alone one such as Rhys Winterborne.
"He felt a splintering sensation, as if his heart were cracking open. How easily Helen had undone him. A few words, and he was ready to fall to his knees..."
Rhys Winterborne is a self-made man who walks his own path. He's fierce and exacting but fair. He's a big, dark-haired, earthy Welshman who cares nothing for other people's opinions of him. For someone so powerful, it only takes a slip of a woman to fell him.
Loved this book! I haven't read this genre in so long and this author is most assuredly a guaranteed fabulous read.
"We're bound to each other for as long as the world exists."
I thought Rhys and Helen complemented each other so well. The huge, earthy alpha, and the almost otherworldly young lady. I loved how passionate they were about each other - Rhys' protectiveness and Helen's gutsy determination in the face of the social scandal. His hard edges were tempered by her sweet softness. For someone who appears to be coarse, and lower on the social scale than Helen, Rhys' words of love and adoration for her were beautiful and heartfelt, and made me sigh deeply. Throw in some intrigue and sexiness, and my reading enjoyment was complete!
This author is such a talented wordsmith and weaver of tales. This novel has me hungry for more of this genre.
