I was done with love.
When I opened my heart, it was for the men I couldn't have.
The unattainable ones.
The ones who would hurt me.
A vicious cycle I couldn’t seem to stop.
But I had a new resolve.
Focus on my career.
Stay single.
And then I met him.
Jace Montgomery.
A wounded widower with two young kids.
He was exactly everything I was avoiding.
So I did my best to stay away.
But then he kissed me.
And I fell.
Hard.
Hard for a man who would never be mine…
A man who was broken beyond repair.
A man who would break me.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
This novel was super angsty and passionate.
“I have always needed to be everyone’s savior. It’s ingrained in my blood.”
Sydney White is smart and beautiful with a soft and giving heart. However, her heart has gotten her into some questionably relationships and she can’t shake off her latest disastrous liaison. When she meets Jace, she quickly identifies that he has the potential to ruin her best friend’s wedding, and so she works hard to distract him and keep him on track. Unfortunately, she never expected the sexual frisson between them.
“No one has ever looked at me like this. Like I’m his salvation. As if I am what is necessary to keep him alive.
Jace Montgomery is in a terrible place. He’s an embittered workaholic who drinks to numb the anguish of his loss and his guilt. However, underneath his surly and taciturn façade is a hopelessly wounded man. When his brother gets married, it’s all he can do to keep himself together, helped by the beautiful angel who seems to understand him. To his dismay, he’s also finding that she’s reawakening his libido.
“He’s a shell. An imperfect shell. One broken and marred, and all I want to do is reach out, grab the broken pieces, and glue him back together.”
Oh my goodness! Jace is such a broken man! He’s practically disengaged from the people who love him the most. He works all the time, he drinks himself into oblivion, and he’s uninvolved with his children. He harbours so much guilt and pain that it’s a miracle that Sydney has any effect on him.
Sydney is desperate for love and affirmation but she’s looked for it in all the wrong places. Jace is probably the last person she should involve herself with, but her need to help him and his children overtake her common sense, and she puts herself in a vulnerable position with them.
I must admit that for a lot of the story, Jace is not massively likeable. He blows hot and cold, and doesn’t treat Sydney very fairly. He absolutely wallows in his misery – not even making a real effort to be a good father to his kids. Although, I loved the way he viewed Sydney – the fact that he recognised that she was a good woman and that she gave him the peace he craved.
Overall, a great story dealing with loss, grief and guilt, but also about second chances and new beginnings.
