⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I'll start by saying that this is a new-to-me author, therefore, I haven't read any of the other books in this series...yet! I really enjoyed this story and formed a pretty good idea of who Jordan Grady was in the previous novel(s). He obviously was something of a douchebag and this story gives us some background as to how he became that way.

Emery and Grady lived next door to each other as kids. They met when she was eight and he was eleven. He was her protector and safe haven, and she was his little shadow and biggest fan. They were the best of friends. Until one day, years later as teenagers, Emery disappeared from his life without a trace, just as they were on the cusp of something more than friendship. Four years later, she's suddenly back in his life, and Grady is no longer the patient, sweet guy that Emery left behind. However, he has no intention of losing her again. He needs to prove that he’s not the cocky, bolshie guy that he’s become in her absence….because of her absence. She needs to learn to trust him, again. After all – he’s the reason she’s back in town.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! I loved the sweetness and innocence of their childhood friendship. I loved Grady as a kid – he was patient, protective and didn’t care what people thought of his friendship with Emery. Grady as an adult was a slightly obnoxious hothead but funny and cheesy, as well as all man! Emery was a tough cookie as a kid and an adult, however, she was loyal and stood up for what was right.
This story had sweetness and sexiness, as well as a darkness woven through it. Loved it!

Emery stood there, her eyes dancing with amusement. Her skinny jeans
and sparkly black tank top made her fit in with the rest of the girls in the
crowded bar. But she wasn’t just any girl. “What’d you do?”
My eyes narrowed.
She ticked her head over her shoulder. “To make her ditch you in the
middle of the dance floor?”
“I told her I wasn’t taking her home with me.”
Emery stared at me, her brows drawn. “Why not? Isn’t that what you college
football players do? Get girls to go home with you?”
I shrugged. “Not sure. You wanna come home with me?”
She laughed and her entire face lit up like it did when we were
younger. And that right there. That was the reason the other girl wasn’t coming
home with me. She didn’t look at me like Emery did.
The thought hit me hard, nearly leveling me.
I wanted to be looked at the way Emery looked at me—like she saw the
real me. I deserved that.
