REVIEW: Hate Notes by Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward

38600870

From New York Times bestselling authors Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward comes an unexpected love story of secondhand hearts and second chances…

It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress.

Something blue.

I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old.”

Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.

The name embossed on the blue stationery: Reed Eastwood, obviously the most romantic man who ever lived. I also discovered he’s the most gorgeous. If only my true-love fantasies had stopped there. Because I’ve since found out something else about Mr. Starry-Eyed.

He’s arrogant, cynical, and demanding. I should know. Thanks to a twist of fate, he’s my new boss. But that’s not going to stop me from discovering the story behind his last love letter. A love letter that did not result in a happily ever after.

But that story is nothing compared to the one unfolding between us. It’s getting hotter, sweeter, and more surprising than anything I could have imagined.

Something new.

But I have no idea how this one is going to end . . .

Caroline's Review
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

So, a few mixed reviews for this story but, gotta say, that I thoroughly enjoyed it, as it was the perfect antidote to the the book I'd just finished, which was a much darker read. The story totally hit my funny bone - I giggled a lot of my way through it and I blew off my chores to read this book in one sitting. Loved the quirky, earnest heroine, and I always love an asshole hero! LOL.

"Good or bad, that girl has lit a fire inside of you."

Charlotte Darling was an adorable, resilient heroine. She was quirky and earnest. She found the joy and positives in most things. I loved the way she viewed the world. Her advent into Reed Eastwood's life is like a bomb exploding into his world.

"I hated that I cared, that I was attracted to her. I hated that she made feel more alive than I had in a long time."

Reed is not the romantic that Charlotte found in the secret note. He seems to be the polar opposite and she can't help but wonder what happened to him. Her effect on him is dynamite - her beauty, her sexiness, her sunny personality - annoying but irresistible! LOL Reed is practically sucked into her gravitational pull - albeit virtually kicking and screaming. He is undeniably attracted to her but he has secrets holding him back. She's not an itch that he can just scratch in one night - he's fearful that she'll take his soul.

"I'll always believe that I was meant to find you."

I loved this story from the get-go. I found it laugh-out-loud funny and then later on it hit a few emotional spots. There was a slow-burning buildup of tension between Charlotte and Reed that combusted into some very hot and passionate exchanges. Charlotte is ever optimistic, kind-hearted, courageous, and just so refreshing. Reed blows hot and cold with her, but he's fighting hard against his attraction and doing what he thinks is right by her, however, his pesky jealousy keeps getting in the way! He wasn't unfeeling and his regrets always followed hard on the heels of his abysmal behaviour. I loved the side characters of Iris and Max, and I would love to get Max's story, at some point.

What I always enjoy about these two authors is that it might seem like a formulaic story to begin with, but they always surprise me with the tangential path their stories always take. Loved it!
