When she was just a child, Viviana Mariano made a deal with the devil in order to keep those she loved safe and happy. However, now that she's about to graduate, the devil is tightening the noose around her neck and calling in her payment. When an alternative route is placed before her, she has no choice but to accept it, even if it means that she's swapping one cage for another.

"Have no false illusions. I will never love you. I will never care for you. But if you do this, if you help me, I will take care of you."

Matteo Amante is under fire from his enemies. In order to win, he's taking his advantage by force in the form of the beautiful Viviana. There's no denying his attraction to her, but she is just a pawn in his machinations and their marriage is just a means to an end. However, the more time he spends with her, the more he starts to realise that she's getting under his skin.

"He looks at me like I’m everything, like he needs to consume me. It’s primal, and it ignites an ember inside me, making me want to allow him to.”

This was a fab story. It took me a couple of chapters before I truly got into it but, once I did, I was hooked! Matteo seemed like a cold fish but he had a great capacity for love - more than he realised himself. Viviana might have been a pawn all her life, but she had a well of strength, compassion and nobility. I thoroughly enjoyed watching these two build the trust between them and fall in love. This was a pretty gripping read and I never saw the twists coming!
