Angsty, emotional read! Loved it!

Harleigh Wren Maguire AKA Birdie is struggling and dragging herself from day to day with the help of her newly-found half-sister, Celeste. She was ripped from the only life she knew - one of hardship - and now unwillingly living in the lap of luxury, but clearly always the outsider.

"He abandoned me. When I needed him most, he...abandoned me."

Phoenix Wilder is lost and angry without his Birdie. He hates his life but sees no way out where everyone he cares about would be safe and happy. When he finds out that Harleigh is back in town - even if it is on the opposite side, he can't leave her alone. Even though he's happy that she got out of the Row, he needs to lay eyes on her and see for himself. Unfortunately, too much has happened between them, and bitter ill-feeling is mixed in with the love they both clearly feel.

"I couldn't get enough. She made the loud noises in my head quiet. She made the beast inside me slumber. She made the darkness circling me abate."

This was such a fab story, full of angst and pain, helplessness and a sliver of hope. Nix and Harleigh had an undeniable connection. Even through all the bad feelings, the energy they shared was electric and uncontainable. The story moves between the present and the past as we uncover what happened to splinter their friendship, and I found it pretty gut-wrenching. The divide between the characters was clear - the two sides were obvious, although by the end of the story, I was beginning to question this. So looking forward to the concluding instalment of this duet!
