Fab, slow-burn, intriguing read.

"I don't care that you're not a virgin. I care that from now until your last breath, I will be the only one to touch you."

Emma O'Brien AKA Emma North is, to all intents and purposes, being held captive by the compelling and mysterious Everett Ramses. She's not quite sure what to really believe as he seems intent on keeping her blinkered and in the dark about exactly what is going on. Little by little, as she capitulates to him, he rewards her with some freedoms.

"All it took was one look at her soft curves, haunting blue eyes, and luscious golden crown of hair, and I knew I'd keep her."

Rett is fighting a war for supremacy over the New Orleans underworld with a hidden enemy. The only way to get the upper hand is by marrying the beautiful and mesmerising Emma, and keeping her safely guarded. He doesn't want to weaken her. On the contrary, he just wants this strong woman to trust him completely. He doesn't do love, but there's something about Emma that is stirring very strong emotions in him.

This was a slow-burn, erotic story, as we witness how Emma overcomes her doubts to slowly trust in Rett. He spends a lot of time keeping her uninformed and hidden away in a suite of rooms, and we can feel Emma's frustration and bewilderment. Rett is a man who likes complete control over everything and everyone in his orbit. Emma has great strength and will of her own. She's wary - as she should be - of the enigmatic, sexy stranger, and the backstory of her heritage. I found it a fairly compelling read, although I wanted to speed things along a bit. The revelations at the end threw everything I started to believe into doubt. However, I can't wait for the concluding part in this duet. I'm really hoping that the author will deliver.
