Caroline's Review 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Amazing, stunning, visceral read. Loved it!
"She woke me up. Tore the coverings from my feelings. Ripped them out of sturdy protective frames and set them free. It's more than the faint pain of an evocative piece. It's the bloody, beating heart that refuses to be cut out, no matter how many times I try."
OK, so I can see a lot of negative reviews about this book due to one particular scene. I must admit, it took me by surprise, but I felt it was all part of Emerson's journey and strengthening his relationship with his brothers. I didn't love that part, but there's no denying that it was hella hot and, let's face it, the author made it very clear that Daphne was not opposed to it. Emerson is one damaged guy. My heart hurt for him - for his past, for his issues, for his pain. I loved how Daphne breathed life and colour into his solitary existence. As the story came to its conclusion, the desperation in the air was tangible.
"I'm short of breath. Overwhelmed. I don't think I've ever been this treasured in all of my life. It's like nothing I ever dreamed. Nothing I ever expected."
Daphne had her own history to deal with. She wanted her independence but she also enjoyed having the control taken out of her hands. I could see that she empathised with Emerson. She found him mesmerising in the first book but, in this instalment, she began to understand him. And, with understanding, came affection and a need to take care of him. They took care of each other. At the end of the story, I wanted to give Daphne all my power so she could be a singularly strong voice and be convincing in knowing her own mind and choices.
"You're my work of art. My favorite piece. I'll remember it forever."
The author used her talented words to paint us a story that was rich in imagery and emotion. The story takes place in the pristine cocoon of Emerson's orderly, spacious home, with a contrasting backdrop of snow and the viciously bitter, cold ocean. Yes, there was sizzling heat in this story but, when I finished the book, I thought uppermost about Emerson and Daphne as individual characters - their fears, their doubts, their pockets of contentment. I felt genuinely afraid for what Emerson might have to suffer in the final book. So, yes, I'm totally invested in these two characters.
