Oh, this was sooooo good! I was enthralled! A Jane Eyre retelling carrying all its gothic elements into modern times with the young, innocent and kind-hearted heroine with an unsettling past, an older, broody hero with his own secrets, and a grieving child. Not to mention the huge, forbidding mansion set in a remote, stark landscape where it never seems to stop raining.

Jane Mendoza, 19, grew up in foster homes and is now committing one year of her life on the east coast, as nanny to a six-year-old orphan. On the night she arrives, her employer, Beau Rochester, appears out of the dark, rainy night like some ominous warning. Jane fights to find her footing with resistant little Paige, whilst Beau blows hot and cold. As the days pass and she makes progress with Paige, so does she make progress with the girl’s uncle. However, Jane knows the house has secrets to be uncovered, whilst trying to guard her own past.

I just loved this first instalment of a trilogy. So many elements from Jane Eyre, yet still very much its own story. Jane’s sweetness and innocence seem unmarred by her own troubled past. I loved her good heart and feistiness. She fought for what she believed to be right and good for Paige’s well-being and happiness. I loved that she stood up to Beau and called him out when she needed to. Beau could be moody and aloof, but then he’d give you whiplash with his brash, sexually-charged words and his potent desire for Jane. There’s an attraction between these two opposite people that is acknowledged very quickly on both sides. I loved the steamy build-up between them. There’s much more to Beau than meets the eye and I can’t wait to find out all his secrets. I knew there was a soft spot under his forbidding demeanour from the first night Jane arrives, and he displays it more and more as the story progresses. This story has mystery, passion and eeriness. Can't wait for the next book!
