Caroline's Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐

"It feels like my universe begins and ends with her. I want to discover everything about her."

Pierce Lancaster is the bad seed in the family. His fractured relationship with his brothers and parents drive his out-of-control behaviour. When one drug-and-alcohol-fuelled night ends up with him having to do community service, he never expected to come face-to-face with Lindsey Walker - the woman with whom he spent one sexy encounter and made a real connection with.

"Truth is I don't like that he reminds me of a time before. That looking at Pierce is a constant reminder of what my life used to be."

Lindsey has always held a torch for Pierce. They used to run around in the same crowd until an accident changes her life. One hot night in Antibes with Pierce ends in misunderstanding and bitterness and, months later, she's horrified to find him at the center where she works.

"I'm claiming Lindsey as mine, whether she likes it or not."

This novel was packed with anger, doubt, passion, and anguish, and a burgeoning love and understanding between two massively broken and misunderstood people. Pierce and Lindsey were so similar that my heart cried out to them. This novel showcased that wealth doesn't really bring you happiness, it just helps to paper over the cracks.

"At first, getting her to acknowledge my existence was a challenge. Now it's a full-on obsession. Getting under her skin and breaking her resistance."

Pierce is the youngest in his family, and grew up forgotten and lost amidst the drama the rest of his family went through. He was just crying out for some attention and gave in to temptation too quickly every time he felt beaten down. Until he started to see the value of himself through the eyes of the ones who believed in him. I loved how he found a kindred spirit in Lindsey and how hard he worked to break through her barriers. Lindsey is defensive, prideful and prickly. She's also incredibly stubborn but I loved how, in the end, she never gave up on Pierce. I loved how they became each other's support system.

"All your broken pieces are what makes you, you."

These two characters! Between them they are two beautifully broken people. They have such a journey throughout this novel, especially Pierce who sometimes takes one step forward and two steps back. There was a lot of story in this book and I sometimes felt that it was a bit rushed or glossed over. However, overall, a really great read that takes you through a gamut of emotions.

“Hey, I never got a taste,” Pierce exclaims.
“Oops.” I smile innocently. “There’s none left. Maybe next time.”
Before I know it, he’s leaning into me. Into my personal space, he’s so close I’m dizzy. Our gazes are locked. My breath comes out ragged and harsh from being this close to him. What is he doing?
He answers my unspoken question by taking my hand in his. My heart hammers heavily in my chest as it lifts. The feel of his fingers on me is hot and heady, the memories that are imprinted on my mind resurfacing to the forefront of my brain. I remember everything.
We stare at each other.
Neither speaking.
The seconds pass, but it feels like everything is on pause as I wait to see what he will do. The boys talking in the background is a steady buzz against the pounding in my chest.
He lifts.
Thud.
Closer.
Thud.
His tongue juts out, and he swipes the tip of my finger where the cream from the filling has collected. Before I can think, he places it in his mouth and eats the rest.
“Ewwwww,” rings out through the room. The sound of the boys gagging pulls me out of my haze.
“What are you doing?”
“Having dessert.” He winks. His emerald green eyes twinkling with mischief.
He’s too close. Too damn close. I remember what his lips feel like against my skin. Decadent. Like the first bite of a macaron.
Sinful.
I need to get away.
