Top Read 2021

OMFG!!!! This book! I’m breathless and ravaged by all the feels. It was packed with fierce angst and so many ugly emotions that jolted any subsequent joy into stark, blessed relief. I. LOVED. IT!!! Top Read 2021.

This is a new-to-me author and I’m really keen to read her other books now. I don’t know if her writing style in this novel is the same throughout her other novels but there’s a slight quaintness to her delivery – it’s almost like reading a historical romance but it is far from that.

Julianna Romano has no choice but to marry the man that her dead sister was supposed to marry. A man who harbours such seething hatred and disgust for her, and doesn’t let her forget it for a second. However, she welcomes the pain he inflicts and adds it to her own baggage of guilt and self-recrimination. She wallows in her penance while guarding her incendiary secrets close.

”He will dig under your skin, find all your flaws and shred you to pieces until your heart is bleeding at his feet.”

Killian Spencer wants nothing to do with Julianna. He is completely and utterly devastated by the loss of the love of his life, manifesting into bitter words and cruel actions against his unwanted wife. He has no choice but to marry her to join their two families, but once his duty is done, he will be done with Julianna. Unfortunately, he is haunted by her likeness to her sister and the baffling feeling of desire he gradually starts to feel for her. She is chaos personified and it’s slowly driving him mad.

”My wife could despise me as much as she wanted – but she burned for my touch. Her body responded to me like we had known each other for a lifetime, like she was born to be mine. Greedy. Wet. Needy. I could almost taste her yearning on my tongue – sweet and bitter.”

This was such an addictive read – I couldn’t put it down. I was completely entangled in the twisty plot and trying to piece all the clues together. I started to get an inkling of an idea of what Julianna’s secrets were but was puzzled when the little things didn’t quite add up. Gotta say, though, that I was totally blown away by her truths! What a brilliant twist! Killian was a major a-hole but then you accept it because of what he went through and what he later discovers. I actually felt pretty devastated for him. And, Julianna! OMG! What a hella tangled web she wove! Seriously, how can one sweet and sheltered girl get herself in such a holy pickle? Pain and misery bled profusely and toxically throughout this tale from both Julianna and Killian. It was visceral and so real. The tension between them crackled with both spite and magnetism. Gah!!! I was totally hooked and felt pretty hungover and wrung out by the end of the story.

”You’ve dug yourself under my skin, into my bones. You f*cking stabbed me in the chest, I’m bleeding for you.”

Yeah, this isn’t a fairy tale love story…it is much, much more.
