Caroline's Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This story was about a broken man, his faithful canine friend, a caring vet, and her precocious daughter.
“I was cracking open, and Dawn was the light, blasting through to all my darkest places. It was terrifying.”
Alex Winters’ world imploded on one terrible day. He went off the rails and almost lost everything. The constant in his life is Stan – his wonderful old dog who is a link to his past but keeps him grounded in the present. Otherwise, he’s a loner who finds it difficult talking to people, so he chooses not to. As a consequence, people fear him and make assumptions about him.
“I was here, so close to having what I hadn’t known I’d wanted until this moment….it terrified me in new and creative ways. I wanted him. I shouldn’t. But I did.”
Dawn Andrews is a single mother to 8YO Katie. Katie is her whole world, even though she’s the result of a scandal that wrecked her family, and has made it difficult for Dawn to truly move forward with her life.
This was such a beautiful story about two wary people who connect, and learn to love and trust again. Under his grizzly appearance, Dawn really sees through to the gentle, wounded soul that is Alex. However, he is an enigma and her past makes it difficult for her to trust men, and she needs to put her daughter first. My heart went out to Alex – this huge gorgeous man who was just existing in a dark place until kind, soft-hearted Dawn and her vibrant daughter came into his life and gave new meaning to it. Both are terrified of embarking on a new relationship but their happiness is infectious and so heartwarming.
And, then there’s Stan! Oh, my heart! This book is a must-read if you love dogs, as well as second chances at love.
