Caroline's Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“For years I avoided feelings. I moved around, evading big emotions. Yet here I am, falling madly, deeply in love with a man who faces danger for a living.”

Dr Aspen Zimmerman has known love and tragically lost it. She’s estranged from her mother. She lives with one of her best friends, a fellow doctor. She’s been ticking over for eleven years, mostly alone or with ‘safe’ guys, who don’t demand more that she’s willing or able to give. She’s avoided feeling anything really deep and meaningful.

“I want her by my side. I want her lips, her body. I want her soul. Most of all, I want to give her my heart.”

Anderson ‘Hawk’ Hawkins has never been in love. He’s been devoted to his military career, and now he works for a company who walks the fine line between legal and unlawful - all for the greater good. He’s doesn’t have relationships. It's definitely uncharted territory for him.

When they first meet, there’s an immediate connection between them. He sparks feelings in Aspen that jump start her heart to life and scare her. She makes him feel emotions that are alien to him and prompt him to re-evaluate his lifestyle.

““I hate that I like being around him, he makes me…feel.” Feel different. Feel cherished. Feel alive.”

Anderson’s mother, Sophia, is Aspen’s neighbour and very ill. The two are drawn together through their mutual chemistry and their care of Sophia. As they grow closer, Aspen has to overcome her fear of falling in love, again, while Anderson has to deal with the prospect of losing a loved one, as well as trying to show Aspen that he’ll be there to catch her. On top of all this, there’s his job, which brings a whole host of dangers.

“Sometimes the best part of the journey is falling, gliding, and never letting it go.”

This was a really moving and heartbreaking story. It was about loss, healing, friendship, forgiveness, trust, but most of all, it’s about the power of love, in all its forms. It was about two people who fought hard to overcome fears and obstacles so they could have a future together. There were also plenty of sexy moments and funny moments. Anderson and Aspen were a beautiful pairing.

“Life doesn’t have to be long; it has to be well lived.”

To me, Anderson had a massively high swoon factor – he was gentle and patient with Aspen when he needed to be but he pushed when he needed to. He seemed to know her so well and could see that her body warred with her mind. Above all, he never stopped caring and never stopped believing that he and Aspen could have a future together. Aspen is a strong person with a lot of issues but when life makes her stop and think about what’s REALLY important, only then is she willing to face her fears head-on and fight for what her heart desires.

Without giving away any real spoilers, a couple of things in this novel really resonated with me. I identified with certain things and completely empathised. Fair warning: you may well need tissues to get your through this book!

Claudia grew up with a childhood that resembled a caffeine-injected soap opera. She lives in Colorado, managing her household filled with three confused dogs, a techy-nerd husband, two daughters wrought with fandoms and a son who thinks he’s the boss of the house. To survive, she works continually to find purpose for the voices flitting through her head, plus she consumes high quantities of chocolate to keep the last threads of sanity intact.
